The internet is crushing on a selfish sister-in-law who complained about a free Disney trip

  • A Reddit user posted about how they were planning a trip to Disney World for their family and had ample hotel and airline outlets to do so

  • Having enough to spare, they decided to offer to take their in-laws along too, using their remaining points to cover the couple’s flight and hotel.

  • But the in-laws were pissed that the free trip didn’t include a stay in the fanciest hotel around

So, it turns out that “looking like a jerk for getting absurdly angry at Disney World” isn’t limited to governors trying to use performance culture war outrage to look like a big boy and support dismal presidential campaigns.

A Reddit user took to the r/AITA subreddit (short for “Am I the A**hole”) to discuss the circumstances that led to his sister-in-law and her husband yelling at them. The cause? By offering them a free trip to Disney World.

“I travel a lot for work, so I have so many hotels and airline points it’s crazy,” Reddit user u/Safe_Ad_6111 began his post. “I’m taking my family to Disney World this summer. We’ll be staying at one of the resorts on the property.” (Especially, as this will matter later, since the poster and his family will be staying at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, one of the fanciest and coolest places to stay on the property.

But our poster realized he had more than enough points to go around, even after hooking his family up with a stay at the Grand Floridian, so being thoughtful, their thoughts turned to their sister-in-law and relatives:

“My sister-in-law and her family have had a tough time during the pandemic, so I decided to do something nice and invite them along. My gift. I said I would pay for their flights, hotels and park tickets.”

So how could it go wrong?

“Everyone was thrilled until he started talking to my wife. Now she is upset that we are staying at one of the resorts and they have to stay in Disney Springs. Apparently I am getting a good deal using points for their hotel instead of paying for them to stay in the same resort as us.”

Now, this is the kind of in-laws outrage where, to be blunt, you wish your spouse would take your side and tell their brother to STFU, as they say, but you know they would never…

“My wife told her sister and brother-in-law from STFU to accept the gift, but they didn’t.”

This poster’s wife is, apparently, a saint, but even her defiant stance wasn’t enough to quell legitimate outrage:

“So I finally talked to them and gave them the option of accepting my gift or not coming since I could still cancel their reservations. They started yelling at me for being an asshole and taking something away from their kids I had spoken to them as adults but when they started yelling their kids heard them and found out maybe they wouldn’t go.Now their kids are pissed at their parents for possibly ruining their holiday.they look bad in front of their children.”

So telling in-laws to “STFU” didn’t fix the problem. But what will he do?

Believe it or not, not everyone agrees that in-laws were out of place either. Newsweek he covered the place and managed to find a psychiatrist who publicly stated that the manifesto was wrong, and his wife’s comments only made it worse:

“The problem is, it was a sneaky surprise,” said Dr. Carole Lieberman, a Beverly Hills psychiatrist. Newsweekadding that despite the good intentions, the Redditor’s mistake was not being transparent about the conditions of the invitation.

Newsweek he also added that the poster’s wife “made it much worse” and “her language was out of place”. Because, of course, it’s super important when someone acts like a jerk about the free trip you’re trying to offer them and calls your spouse a derogatory name, it’s very important not to say “mean” words that could make them sad.

Bottom line, what are we doing here, folks? Obviously, in-laws are out of place. How is that a question? And as for how the poster and his wife are supposed to respond to their in-laws calling them “assholes” for not booking them a fancier hotel? Perhaps they should take a lesson from the wonderful world of Disney:
