RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK Lenovo, the world’s best-selling PC, is also the world’s leading supplier of supercomputers, according to the Top 500, which tracks the world’s high-performance computing industry.

In fact, Lenovo has a larger percentage of market share at 33% than PCs north of 20%, depending on the industry source.

And Lenovo, which focuses much of its high-performance computing work in the Triangle, has been No. 1 for five consecutive years, Top 500 says in a new report.

With a whopping 168 Lenovo ThinkSystems (that’s 33% of the list), the company’s reach is spread out reaching 19 different global markets from Australia to the US and many more in between. Also topping the Green500 list as the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputer is the Flatiron Institute’s Henri system, based on Lenovo technology, Top 500 says in its June 2023 report.

Lenovo, which operates global headquarters in the Triangle and Beijing, China, leads HPE, which is second, with 100 machines.

Lenovo continues to deliver on its vision of being the most trusted partner enabling customers to transform intelligently and help solve humanity’s greatest challenges, adds Top 500. This is increasingly evident in their continued position in the TOP500 list and in partnering with and supplying one in three supercomputers worldwide.

Not to be overlooked is IBM, which has two of the top five most powerful machines. Big Blue is in 12th place with six supercomputers. Two others include IBM technology.

The United States leads the world in supercomputers with 150 to 134 for China.

The Worlds Most Powerful

HPE Cray’s #1 supercomputer is located in the United States:

Frontier is the number 1 system in the TOP500. This HPE Cray EX system is the first US system to outperform one Exaflop/s. It is installed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee, USA, where it operates on behalf of the Department of Energy (DOE). It currently hits 1.194 Exaflop/s using 8,699,904 cores. The HPE Cray EX architecture combines 3rd generation AMD EPYC CPUs optimized for HPC and AI, with AMD Instinct 250X accelerators and Slingshot-11 interconnect.

Here are some of Lenovo’s leading supercomputers, according to Top 500:

  • Leibniz Supercomputing Center (LRZ) | Germany

LRZ of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities is one of the largest academic data centers in Europe. The organization provides high-performance computing resources to researchers across the continent and is the central IT service provider for two universities in Munich, Germany, where complex research projects in physics, cosmology and life sciences require the computing performance needed to push boundaries and gain new insights.

  • Korean Meteorological Association (KMA) | South Korea

Headquartered in Seoul, KMA provides weather forecasts and sends alerts to citizens, businesses and government agencies. The administration is also responsible for climate change observation and research. KMA operates the National Center for Meteorological Supercomputer (NCMS), the largest supercomputer in Korea, to support vital weather and climate forecasting.

  • Max-Planck-Gesellschaft | Germany

The Max Planck Society is one of Germany’s leading research organizations. Supported by high-performance computing resources, researchers discover new discoveries in animal behavior and decision-making, in anthropology and the study of mankind, and in deciphering the mysteries of the universe through astronomy.

  • Shared Services Canada (SSC) | Canada

SSC provides digital services to Canada’s government organizations and provides modern, secure and reliable IT services so federal organizations can deliver digital programs and services that meet the needs of Canadians.

  • Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) | Spain

Climate change. Energy security. Fight the disease. Air quality. To help scientists transform mountains of data into accurate models of our complex world, BSC has a Lenovo supercomputer capable of performing trillions of calculations per second, pushing the boundaries of human knowledge.
