What you need to know
- Google releases new Android features for June 2023.
- The company announced seven new updates and features.
- These are distributed across Android phones, tablets, and Wear OS smartwatches.
Google held a two-hour keynote at its I/O event last month, and while the emphasis was mostly on AI, there were some hardware announcements alongside software improvements. Google today announced seven new updates to make Android devices like Wear OS phones, tablets and smartwatches more useful.
Dark Web report to scan your Gmail address
Google is leveling up on protection and, as part of the initiative, is now providing a report on the dark web. Google One users would be able to verify if their Gmail address has been exposed on the Dark Web. Users can verify this through the Google One app on their Android devices or through the Google One website.
If their Gmail is allegedly compromised, they can ask Google for advice, such as taking steps to be safe online. Users can’t just scan their Gmail addresses. However, they can also check personal information such as the associated social security number.
Access to the Dark Web report is currently restricted to US citizens. However, it plans to expand to 20 more countries in the coming months.
Spotify on your wrist with Wear OS
Wear OS device owners who often rely on Spotify for their music can now stream their favorite tunes right to their wrist with the Spotify app on their Wear OS smartwatches.
For a more advanced experience, Spotify on Wear OS is updated with new tiles and watch face shortcuts. Additionally, the music streaming platform’s DJ feature promises to offer a personalized music playlist, the ability to stream podcasts, and listen to frequently played music.
Other nifty features coming to Wear OS include importing SmarTrip and Clipper cards via Google Wallet and using them via a WearOS smartwatch. Commuters in Washington, DC and the San Francisco Bay Area are the first to take advantage of the new capability.
Consumers who rely heavily on Google Keep to stay on track can now add a new tile for quick access right on their wrist via the Google Keep app for Wear OS. Users can scroll through their tiles and find pinned notes or a to-do list on their smartwatches.
With the latest feature release, Google is bringing new widgets to your Android phone and tablet. They include a Google TV widget that offers entertainment suggestions like what to stream. Then there’s a new curated Google News widget with daily headlines.
Also, users who are interested in stocks all day long can keep track of their favorites with the help of stock tracking from the Google Finance widget on their home screens.
Improve vocabulary with Google Play Books
Within Google Play Books, the search giant is bringing a new “reading practice” feature with the goal of improving vocabulary and comprehension skills for new readers. Users can access children’s ebooks marked with a “Practice” badge in Google Play Books.
Readers will be able to “hear the pronunciation of unfamiliar words, practice mispronounced words, and get real-time feedback,” Google said in the announcement blog post.
Gboard gets new Emoji Kitchen stickers
Gboard also gets Emoji Kitchen stickers, a fun way to interact within conversations. Users will be able to remix their emoji into stickers, and new emoji being added as part of this month’s feature release include water-themed emoji combinations.
