cloudSwXtch is a major advancement for the IoT ecosystem as it introduces the ability for users to equip cloud network stacks with functionality upon which on-prem workflows are based. Several major features now accessible with the availability of cloudSwXtch include multicast, high availability, and Precision Time Protocol (PTP), among others. To illustrate these capabilities, two main workflows are described below, cloud-based audio and video monitoring and virtual testing and simulation.

Brent Yates, CEO of swXtch.io, commented on the news: “Cloud computing has been a cornerstone of the growth of the IoT industry, driving new heights in asset and operational performance and opening the door to new business models. With cloudSwXtch , codeless multicast enablement is available to network engineers for the first time on all major clouds.”

Cloud-based video and audio monitoring

State and local governments often rely on large, robust camera networks to monitor thousands of streams in real time for traffic, emergency management, and other services. These networks overwhelmingly originate and deliver multicast streams, which were previously incompatible with existing cloud networks.

cloudSwXtch offers two main features to support the migration of these video monitoring workflows from on-prem to the cloud: the ability to enable the distribution of multicast traffic from on-prem to edge and cloud environments, and the ability to enable bandwidth using the dynamic bridging function. This feature allows users of cloud-based video monitoring solutions to browse through all video streams available in the local environment and select specific streams to deliver to the cloud, on demand. For example, instead of sending all streams to the cloud, an emergency responder can select a specific traffic camera video feed to call up for viewing.

Virtual testing and simulation in the cloud

Across industries, companies rely on purpose-built on-premises “test and simulation” platforms to virtually commission assets and controls, train operators in real-world scenarios, and improve process performance or product design. A common theme is that every test and simulation environment tries to recreate physical parameters in a virtual environment and subject them to a variety of scenarios or conditions. This has driven much of the market towards a virtual machine (VM) or cloud-based approach, for more attractive scale, speed and consistency.

Many test and simulation platforms operate in the cloud today, but a segment that uses on-prem platforms designed for multicast and broadcast protocol traffic faces major migration hurdles. By unlocking multicast and broadcast capabilities in the cloud, cloudSwXtch enables access to cloud-based virtual simulation environments.

Yates continued, “cloudSwXtch has been a revelation to businesses looking to migrate to the cloud and take advantage of the benefits it offers. Many of our customers don’t realize they have a problem until their cloud migration attempt is well started. We are proud to provide a solution that simply and efficiently meets the needs of our customers and advances the potential of IOT applications worldwide.”

cloudSwXtch is available through the Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services marketplaces and is also certified for deployment in the Google Cloud. The company plans to add support for additional cloud platforms later this year, including Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
